BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, PROJECT MANAGEMENT & FIELD WORK

"This will stand as confirmation of our commitment to assist you as best we can with your required room inventory for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.

Although we cannot guarantee you all the rooms you might need to meet your demand, we want to assure you that we have established this type of relationship very rarely indeed and, with the travel industry, only in one other instance. We have achieved this degree of confidence in your own resourcefulness in building an attractive winter Olympics package for your clients."

Ron Sandrin-Litt, Manager
Housing Development - OCO '88
XV Olympic Winter Games
Organizing Committee
Calgary, Alberta Canada

(1987)

"Al Martlin and Ascent began placing ticket orders with the XV Olympic Winter Games Organizing Committee during the initial stages of sporting event ticket sales and consequently became one of the first group sales accounts with us.

From the first ticket order until Games time, we were in constant communication and Al Martlin was party to many phases of group ticket sales. Al's accounts benefited from his initial planning and early involvement as he had qualified as an ethical and valued customer who adhered to guidelines set forth by the organizing committee. Since he was well organized and able to endure and overcome the waiting periods and various changes involved in the ticket ordering process, his customers were able to obtain tickets to premium events that Ascent purchased on the "ratio" system."

"Al Martlin's professional, honest, and flexible nature in all business dealings contributed greatly to a successful and enjoyable working relationship and leaves little doubt that he will be successful in his future endeavors and business pursuits."

'For Safety's Sake'
  - Personal Safety Initiative

"I spent several days during the holidays working with Sandy (CSREF, Managing Director) and Alan Martlin, president of Ascent Worldwide Inc., to adopt a program (for CSREF'S 3,000 store membership) recently conducted here at Camosun College. The program focuses on personal safety awareness resulting in better preparedness and is a way for a college to provide service to its campus and reach out to the community as well."

"I spent many hours working with Alan to develop our campaign and find him to be a responsible, creative, and extremely hard working individual. His approach to the program is non-commercial and he sincerely, enthusiastically believes in helping to promote the concept of personal safety awareness and preparedness. His contacts in safety and law enforcement agencies are considerable, and will bring international credibility and scope to the program. This would be an association that will reflect well on CSREF."

'Renting Personal Watercraft Successfully'
  - Best Business Practices

Under a grant from the Aquatic Resources (Wallop-Breaux) Trust Fund administered by the United States Coast Guard, this 'best business practices' manual was conceived, researched, and developed by Alan Martlin of Ascent Worldwide Inc. as project manager.

To this end, Ascent collaborated with the Personal Watercraft Industry Association, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, the National Safe Boating Council, the National Water Safety Congress, the National Recreation & Park Association, Coast Guard, and other key organizations and learned individuals.

Published in 2001, the manual outlines recommendations and guidelines for assisting PWC rental agencies as well as boating regulatory authorities and waterfront property owners about ways to improve standards of education and operations. The focus is on personnel, qualifications, customer education, rental operations, and strategies for operational risk management.

The manual has been billed as "the first of its kind".

We were led by the experience of the International marine, outdoor, aquatic, and dive industries as well as those from boating safety and enforcement authorities to produce a simple yet comprehensive 'best business practices' manual for the Personal Watercraft Rental industry.

Ascent was successful in combining safety, education, and risk management strategies already implemented in other high risk recreational sports. Proven applications and techniques from various sources where blended and reintroduced into this single resource.

A result so relevant, that on Ascent's recommendation permission was sought and granted by Coast Guard for the entire works of the manual to be copied (with appropriate edits), recovered, and distributed by the International Association of Snowmobile Administrators as a 'best business practices' guide for the Snowmobile Rental Industry.

'Renting Personal Watercraft Successfully'
  - Best Business Practices

"We looked at other organized groups like lifeguards, for instance, who generally do a very good job at keeping us safe and projecting a good community image. Our approach is really just common sense - who would you want to be out there teaching and watching over your kids? A civic-minded, responsible person who's been trained to be expert in the field, or a guy who just wants to rent you a boat."

"Florida's statewide training is designed around the Renting Personal Watercraft Successfully Manual. 'We have trained rental agencies from the Florida Keys to the Panhandle' and are seeing a significant decrease in the number of PWC accidents by renters - That tells us it's working!"

MARKET DEVELOPMENT, BRANDING & MARKETING, DISTRIBUTION

"Indeed we now have a clearer picture of the happenings and as you say, that's business. The situation is of course full of 'what ifs' however we will proceed from here a little wiser. The end result was some rebuilding of bridges and clearer communication. We are glad that it was Alan Martlin who was able to assist Blackcomb. Our report is that he was very ethical in the situation."
